W BASKETBALL: Lady Tigers grind out 60-44 win over rival LeTourneau
MARSHALL, Texas (1/26/10) – ETBU’s defense forced 23 turnovers and held LeTourneau to just over 25 percent shooting on the night as the Lady Tigers grinded out a 60-44 win over the rival Lady Jackets Tuesday night in Ornelas Gym.
The win moves the Lady Tigers (7-10, 6-7) to just a half-game behind Texas-Tyler in the race for the fourth and final playoff spot in the ASC East Division. ETBU will face Texas-Tyler on Thursday night at 5:30 at the Herrington Patriot Center in Tyler.
Tuesday’s win over LeTourneau (4-14, 4-9) wasn’t exactly a beautifully-played basketball game but the Lady Tigers made just enough plays – particularly in the second half – to put away an outmanned Lady Jacket squad. ETBU finished the first half with a 8-1 run that opened up a 26-19 lead at halftime, and LeTourneau never got closer than six points the rest of the way.
LeTourneau hit just 6 of 25 shots from the floor in the second half on the way to a 13 of 51 performance (25.5 percent) for the game. The Lady Tigers used a solid post game led by senior Karlee Wilson (11 points, 13 rebounds) to rack up a 28-16 advantage in points in the paint, and the Lady Tigers’ depth created a 33-9 scoring mismatch in points off the bench.
Wilson was the only Lady Tiger in double figures, with Emily Leek, Satara Harrell, Priscilla Galliguez and Jordan Langford adding eight points apiece.
Kayla Kerns scored 22 of LeTourneau’s 44 points, with Laura Hahn adding 11.
The Lady Tigers will host University of Dallas on Saturday in a non-conference game following Thursday’s key conference tilt in Tyler. ETBU and LeTourneau will then meet again in a quick rematch next Tuesday night in Longview.
