FOOTBALL: Tigers named 2009 ASC SAAC Sportsmanship Award winner
MARSHALL, Texas (12/9/09) -- The 2009 East Texas Baptist University football team has been named the 2009 American Southwest Conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Sportsmanship Award winner, the conference office announced today.
ETBU's Lady Tiger soccer team was also voted to receive the award in women's soccer, giving the university two Sportsmanship Awards this fall.
The award, in its third academic year, honors the member institution in each ASC championship sport that best displays positive qualities of sportsmanship and fair play from its student-athletes, coaches and fans throughout the season. The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee from the conference's 15 member institutions vote on the recipients.
Along with ETBU's football and women's soccer teams winning the award, Concordia Texas was honored for team sportsmanship in West Division volleyball for the first time. Hardin-Simmons was also a first-time winner, sharing the women's cross country crown with Mississippi College, which won in that category for the third straight year.
Mary Hardin-Baylor took the men's soccer award for the first time and shared the East Division volleyball honor with Texas-Dallas. It was the second consecutive honor in East Division volleyball for UTD.
