FOOTBALL: Seven Tigers named to All-ASC team
MARSHALL, Texas (11/19/09) – Seven ETBU football players have been honored with selection to the 2009 All-American Southwest Conference football team released Thursday.
Six of the ETBU selections are outgoing seniors, with one – junior cornerback Victor Flores – the only returner for next season.
First-team selections for the Tigers include senior defensive end Austin Sturrock (Sour Lake, TX), who led the team with 50 tackles and 5.5 sacks. Sturrock was voted the ASC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year back in August in the preseason poll of coaches, media and sports information directors.
The selection was Sturrock’s second in his career as a Tiger.
Senior cornerback Gerald Hunter (Houston, TX), who led the Tigers with four interceptions including one for a touchdown, was also named first-team. It was Hunter’s first all-conference selection in his four seasons at ETBU.
Second-team selections included senior offensive tackle Michael Colvin (Hallsville, TX), who started at tackle each of the last three seasons and was a part-time starter as a freshman. It was Colvin’s first All-ASC selection.
Senior linebacker Brandon Joslin (Royse City, TX) earned his first All-ASC recognition in four years, a second-team spot. Joslin ranked second on the team in tackles with 49.
Flores, of Mission, TX, was a second-team cornerback. He finished with 36 tackles and three interceptions, giving him nine interceptions for his career. That ties him with former safety Michael Stephens for ETBU’s career record for picks.
Rounding out the ETBU selections on the team are senior offensive linemen Stephen Nicasio (San Antonio, TX) and Jonathan Council (Waskom, TX). Nicasio started the last three years at left guard, earning All-ASC recognition last season, and Council was a three-year starter with part-time duty as a freshman who also earned his second straight all-conference honor.
The team was compiled through nominations and voting among the league’s nine head coaches.
