by David Weaver
MARSHALL, Texas (11/14/09) – ETBU set a new team rushing record with 387 yards on the ground, and the Tigers closed out the 2009 season on a positive note with a 42-7 thrashing of Howard Payne Saturday at Ornelas Stadium.
The win snapped a five-game losing streak for the Tigers (3-7), who scored the most points in a game this season. It was the most points scored by the Tigers since a 40-point outing in 2007 at Sul Ross State.
For the most part ETBU churned out the win on the ground, with quarterback Seth Hubbard and running back Trevor Cavness each eclipsing the 100-yard mark. Running back Corey George added another 94 yards.
The Tigers exploded for 35 first-half points and cruised to the win in the second half. George capped a four-play, 61-yard drive to open the game with a 3-yard dash up the middle to give ETBU a 7-0 lead. Howard Payne (4-6, 2-6) responded with an 8-play, 71-yard march that ended with quarterback Zach Hubbard – Seth Hubbard’s brother – taking it in from the 1 to tie the score 7-7.
George capped a 14-play, 99-yard drive with a 2-yard dive to give ETBU a 14-7 lead with 3:29 to go in the first quarter. It was the longest drive for a score in the history of the program.
Cavness then stole the show in the second quarter for ETBU. The sophomore tailback took a swing pass and galloped 67 yards for a score less than a minute into the quarter to give the Tigers a 21-7 advantage. Cavness made it 28-7 with 3:24 remaining on a 16-yard scamper.
The speedy Cavness then iced the game with a 76-yard dart for a touchdown with just seven seconds left before halftime, giving ETBU a 35-7 lead at the break. Hubbard cashed in the Tigers’ final score of the day with a 16-yard score in the fourth quarter.
Hubbard added 128 yards through the air on 6 of 13 passing, with one touchdown.
Cavness finished with 192 yards of all-purpose yards, with 70 yards on two receptions. He had three total touchdowns on the day.
