W SOCCER: Lady Tigers place six on All-ASC team; Grant named Coach of the Year
by David Weaver
MARSHALL, Texas (11/12/09) – Six players from ETBU’s women’s soccer team have been named All-American Southwest Conference in voting by the league’s 14 head coaches released Thursday by the conference office.
Also honored on the team was ETBU head coach Paul Grant, who was named the league’s Coach of the Year after guiding the Lady Tigers to their first postseason berth since the 2006 season.
Senior defender Jenna Jones (Lumberton, TX) was voted to the first-team, with sophomore midfielder Danica Saxon (Tyler, TX) also named first-team.
Freshman forward Rebecca Davis (Deer Park, TX) was voted to the second-team, with freshman defender Lauren Tomberlin (Spring, TX) named third-team. Senior midfielder Jacqui Saling (Justin, TX) and freshman goalkeeper Tamara Carlisle (Deer Park, TX) were voted honorable mention.
The Lady Tigers finished the season at 10-7-0 and were the fifth seed at last week’s ASC tournament. It was ETBU’s first trip to the postseason in three years and the 10 wins come just two years after the program won just four games in Grant’s first season as coach, in 2007.
The program loses just two seniors – Jones and Saling – from this year’s team, with everyone else on the 2009 squad listed as sophomores or freshmen.
