VOLLEYBALL: Lady Tigers ousted from first round by McMurry

by David Weaver

RICHARDSON, Texas (11/6/09) – A misfiring offense through most of the match Friday doomed ETBU, as the Lady Tigers saw their season come to an end with a 25-23, 25-21, 24-26, 25-16 loss to McMurry in the quarterfinals of the 2009 American Southwest Conference Volleyball Championship Tournament.

The Lady Tigers (20-11), who advanced to the conference tournament final last season, could never get untracked offensively against McMurry (18-11), which advanced to face Hardin-Simmons Friday afternoon. ETBU finished with a hitting percentage of just .037 in the match, including a dismal minus .067 in the fourth game.

ETBU’s best hitting performance was a .171 in the third game, which saw them rally late and stave off elimination for one more game.

Two of the Lady Tigers’ best offensive players – senior Jane Hays and sophomore Mary Morgan Swanson – were battling leg injuries that left them at less than 100 percent. The injury problems showed a bit in the final statistics, as junior Kourtney Adams finished as the only ETBU player in double figure kills with 17.

Hays, playing her final game of a stellar four-year career at ETBU, fought through an ankle injury to finish with eight kills and 15 digs. Swanson, a sophomore from White Oak, suffered a knee injury a couple of weeks ago and was seeing her first action since the injury. She finished with five kills.

The Lady Tigers finished with 35 attack errors, compared to 18 for McMurry.

The tournament appearance was the ninth straight for the Lady Tigers, who last won the conference championship in 2003.
