M SOCCER: Tigers on short end of 5-3 loss to Ozarks

MARSHALL, Texas (10/23/09) – ETBU’s postseason hopes took a hit Friday, when Ozarks twice rallied from one-goal deficits to post a 5-3 win over the Tigers at Cornish Field.

ETBU (4-6-2, 4-4-1) is now in must-win mode if the Tigers are to make the ASC postseason tournament. The Tigers stand in eighth place in the league standings with just three games to go, including Saturday’s home finale against UT Dallas.

The top six teams advance to the conference tournament the first weekend in November.

ETBU twice held leads in Friday’s game, but the Tigers couldn’t put away the rival Eagles (10-4-1, 6-3-1). Ozarks pulled away late in the game with a 3-1 advantage in goals in the second half.

Carlos German scored off a Stuart Renfro assist in the 13th minute to give ETBU a quick 1-0 lead, but Ozarks answered on a Scott Janders goal off a Brandon VanCleave corner kick 10 minutes later. Richard Andrews scored in the 34th minute to give ETBU a 2-1 lead, but Ozarks answered with seven minutes left in the half on a Francisco Garza goal that knotted the game at 2-2 at the half.

Dylan Evans scored an unassisted goal in the 61st minute to break the tie at 3-2. ETBU’s Chris Dier tied the game with a nifty unassisted goal in the 80th minute, but the Eagles got goals from Evans and Shaun Renfro to put the game away in the final seven minutes.

Ozarks held a 18-7 advantage in shots. Tiger goalie Zane Barnes kept ETBU in the contest with seven saves, with some at point-blank range.
