W SOCCER: ETBU clinches playoff berth with dramatic 1-0 win
MARSHALL, Texas (10/24/09) – ETBU’s women’s soccer team struggled to just four wins two years ago in head coach Paul Grant’s first season with the team.
On Saturday, the Lady Tigers capped a meteoric rise in the standings with a thrilling 1-0 win over Texas-Dallas that sealed ETBU’s first American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament berth since 2006, the year before Grant arrived.
ETBU (9-5-0, 8-2-0) enters the final week of the regular season in third place in the standings, while Texas-Dallas dropped to 5-7-4 and 5-4-2 with the loss.
The win couldn’t have come in more dramatic fashion. With the game tied at 0-0 in the 110th minute, sophomore Michelle Bubenik buried a free kick from outside 20 yards with just seven seconds left in the second overtime. The kick not only kept ETBU from its first tie of the season, but gave the Lady Tigers a perfect 7-0 record at home this season. In those games, the Lady Tigers outscored their opponents 20-1 with six shutouts.
The Comets built a 15-9 advantage in shots, including a 6-2 lead in overtime. ETBU finished with just four shots on goal compared to four for UT Dallas.
The Lady Tigers finish out the regular season next week with road games at Louisiana College and Mississippi College.
