La Verne 4, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 0

MARSHALL, Texas (5/8/09) -- La Verne pitchers Sabrina Garcia and Delaney Baylor combined on a two-hitter to lead the Leopards to a 4-0 victory over Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Friday at the NCAA Division III Softball Championship First-Round Tournament at East Texas Baptist University.

The loss eliminated CMS (28-14) from the tournament, with the Athenas having dropped their opener on Thursday to host ETBU.

Garcia (8-4) throttled the Athenas on a one-hitter, striking out one and walking four. Baylor came on to toss the final two innings, allowing just one hit and two strikeouts to record the save.

Lynsey Padilla's RBI single to center in the first inning proved to be enough for the Leopards, who advanced to another elimination game later Friday against the loser of ETBU and Louisiana College.

Ashley Paul, Daryn Schively and Mandy Brenner drove in runs for the Leopards in the victory.

Erika Weingart (10-8) took the loss for CMS, allowing one earned run on three hits in 4 2/3 innings.

Michelle Harvey and Melissa Munoz picked up the only hits of the day for the Athenas.
