Louisiana College 4, La Verne 3 (9 innings)
MARSHALL, Texas (5/7/09) -- Defending West Regional champion Louisiana College was stretched to a couple of extra innings Thursday but the Lady Wildcats escaped La Verne's upset bid and took a 4-3 win over the Leopards in NCAA West Regional action Thursday at Taylor Field.
The victory sends LC (37-7) into a matchup with ASC rival ETBU Friday at 2 p.m. La Verne (28-16) will face its own conference rival, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, in an elimination game at noon Friday.
The Leopards jumped on LC's Rene Schwartzenburg with a two-run blast to left-center by D.D. Burns in the top of the first that made it 1-0.
But Lousiana College chipped away with single runs in the second, third and fourth innings to take a 3-2 lead into the sixth.
La Verne tied the game in the sixth on an RBI double to center by Kari Granger, and both teams held on to send the game into extra innings.
LC senior McCaslin Carson doubled to lead off the bottom of the ninth and moved to third on Taylor Trojcak's bunt. Aimee Dubroc and Allison Frye walked to load the bases, and Amber Thomas delivered a game-winning walkoff single to left to end the marathon.
Carson (15-3) pitched the final three innings to get the win, allowing just two hits and striking out seven.
