Six Tigers named All-ASC

MARSHALL, Texas (11/11/08) – Six ETBU student-athletes have been voted to the 2008 All-American Southwest Conference Men’s Soccer team released Tuesday by the conference office.

The Tigers (7-7-3) had no players voted to the first-team, but four were included on the second- and third-teams, and two more were named honorable mention.

Earning second-team All-ASC recognition was junior midfielder Carlos Ortega (North Richland Hills, TX), who finished with two assists on the season. It was Ortega’s third selection to the All-ASC team in three seasons, the last two at ETBU.

Named to the third-team was senior midfielder David Zaldivar (Mt. Pleasant, TX), a team captain who also had two assists on the season. Senior forward Erik Romero (Henderson, TX) scored a team-high five goals and added three assists to earn third-team honors, while junior keeper Zane Barnes (Lufkin, TX) was named third-team after posting a team-high 70 saves on the season.

Junior defender Ryan Collins (Tyler, TX) and junior midfielder Juan Olua (Port Arthur, TX) were named honorable mention all-conference to round out the ETBU selections.

Season ends with 2-0 loss
MARSHALL, Texas (11/1/08) -- Mississippi College scored two first-half goals and held off ETBU in a hard-fought, physical contest Saturday for a 2-0 win over the Tigers in the season finale at Cornish Field. The loss ends ETBU's season at 7-7-3 overall. The Tigers entered the day with hopes of making the American Southwest Conference Tournament for the first time since 1999, butthose hopes were effectively dashed when Texas Lutheran upset Hardin-Simmons, 2-0, earlier in the day in Seguin. Tigers take playoff hopes into season's final day
MARSHALL, Texas (10/31/08) -- ETBU unloaded on the Louisiana College defense with a season-high 31 shots, and the Tigers scored five second-half goals to pull away for a huge 5-2 win over the Wildcats Friday night at Cornish Field. With the victory, ETBU (7-6-3 overall, 6-4-2 conference) moves a step closer to securing the program's first trip to the American Southwest Conference championship tournament. The Tigers can lock up their first postseason appearance as a full-fledged, eligible member of the ASC with a win against Mississippi College Saturday night at Cornish Field and a loss by Texas Lutheran against Hardin-Simmons in Seguin. ETBU stays in playoff hunt with 3-0 upset of UT Dallas
RICHARDSON, Texas (10/25/08) – Senior Erik Romero scored a pair of goals in the first half to lead ETBU to a 3-0 upset of defending American Southwest Conference champion Texas-Dallas Saturday.  With the victory, the Tigers (7-6-3, 5-4-2) handed the first-place Comets (10-4-2, 8-1-2) their first conference loss of the season. It also moves ETBU back into the thick of the ASC playoff race, as the Tigers are now in a three-way tie for the sixth and final playoff spot with a week to go in the regular season.

Tigers drop 3-0 loss to Ozarks
CLARKSVILLE, Ark. (10/23/08) -- Ozarks got off to fast start against ETBU Thursday, scoring twice in the first six minutes of the game and cruising to a 3-0 victory over the Tigers in American Southwest Conference action. ETBU (5-6-3, 4-4-2), three points behind in the race for the final playoff spot in the conference at the start of the day, could never get anything going offensively against the Eagles (11-2-3, 6-2-2), who won the regular season ASC championship last season before being upset in the conference tournament. The loss was also ETBU's 10th straight loss to rival Ozarks, with the teams battling to a 1-1 tie in 2001.

Last-second goal gives ETBU 3-2 win over Concordia
MARSHALL, Texas (10/18/08) -- Juan Olua scored the game-winning goal with just 13 seconds remaining in overtime Saturday night to give ETBU a much-needed 3-2 victory over Concordia Texas at Cornish Field. With the win, ETBU (5-5-3 overall, 4-3-2) stays in the thick of the ASC playoff race with two big road games coming up next weekend at Texas-Dallas and Ozarks. Olua helped the Tigers avoid overtime with the clutch game-winner, which was assisted by freshman Justin Bailey, at the 89:47 mark of the game. It allowed ETBU win a game it had not led until that point.

UT Tyler escapes ETBU with 3-1 win
MARSHALL, Texas (10/17/08) – ETBU went toe-to-toe with conference leader Texas-Tyler Friday night at Cornish Field before the Patriots slipped awsy with a 3-1 win over the Tigers. The loss dropped ETBU to 4-5-3 on the season, and the Tigers' conference mark is now 3-3-2. UT Tyler improves to 7-2-3 and 6-0-3. FULL STORY

KERRVILLE, Texas (10/3/08) -- ETBU and Schreiner slugged it out for the final 104 minutes Friday before finally settling for a 1-1 tie in American Southwest Conference men's soccer action. The deadlock gives the Tigers a 5-2-2 overall mark heading into Saturday's matchup in Seguin against Texas Lutheran. ETBU is 3-1-1 against the ASC heading into that matchup. ETBU jumped out to a 1-0 lead 14 minutes into the game when Erik Romero scored off a pass from Carlos Ortega. Schreiner, however, tied the game 41 seconds later on a Zach Williams goal that would prove to be the final tally of the day for either team.

MARSHALL, Texas (9/27/08) -- ETBU rallied with two second-half goals Saturday to post a 2-1 win over Howard Payne in American Southwest Conference action at Cornish Field.  The victory lifts ETBU to 4-2-1 overall, and the Tigers are now 3-1-0 against the conference. Sophomore Richard Andrews, the team's leading scorer, scored the game-winner off Justin Bailey's assist in the 73rd minute to give the Tigers the win. Bailey, a freshman from Duncanville, had tied the game 11 minutes earlier off a pass from Carlos Ortega. STATS

ETBU slips past UMHB on Acuna's goal
MARSHALL, Texas (9/26/08) -- ETBU freshman Grey Acuna, a Marshall native, scored the game's only goal three minutes into the second half as the Tigers posted a big 1-0 win over Mary Hardin-Baylor Friday in American Southwest Conference action at Cornish Field. The Tigers (3-2-1 overall, 2-1 ASC) made Acuna's first career goal stick, thanks to a solid defensive effort that posted ETBU's third shutout in the last five games. Tigers, 'Roos battle to 2-2 tie in non-conference makeup game
MARSHALL, Texas (9/23/08) -- ETBU finally got to play a home match Tuesday night against Austin College, and the Tigers played out every single available minute in a 2-2 double-overtime tie with the Kangaroos. With the season nearly a month old, ETBU (2-2-1) had not played a home match until Tuesday night. The match was a rescheduled game from Sept. 13, when ETBU was supposed to open its home schedule against the Kangaroos only to have Hurricane Ike blow through the area. The Tigers unleashed a storm of their own against Austin College, especially after a somewhat slow-paced first half. Trailing 1-0 at the break and being out-shot 7-6 in the first half, ETBU's offense picked up in the second half and overtime with a 23-10 advantage in shots. FULL STORY  |  STATS

Conference record evens after loss to HSU
ABILENE, Texas (9/20/08) -- ETBU's quick strike attack on Friday at McMurry got the Tigers an early conference win. Saturday against Hardin-Simmons, however, it was the Cowboys scoring in bunches as HSU handed ETBU a 3-0 loss. The loss snaps a two-game winning streak for ETBU (2-2, 1-1). The Tigers will host Austin College Tuesday night in a game that will be made up from Sept. 13, when Hurricane Ike forced the postponement. FULL STORY
