Tigers knock off Howard Payne for first time in Brownwood

BROWNWOOD, Texas (11/15/08) – The Gordon Wood Stadium gorilla is finally off ETBU’s back.

The Tigers closed out the 2008 season with their first win over Howard Payne in Brownwood’s Gordon Wood Stadium in five tries Saturday, scoring touchdowns in all three phases of the game on the way to a 35-21 victory. The win gives ETBU its second straight 5-5 season, and it’s the sixth time in the nine years of the program the Tigers have finished with at least five victories.

The win also gives the Tigers (5-5 overall, 5-3 conference) their highest finish (third place) in the American Southwest Conference since finishing in a three-way tie for the conference title in 2003.

It was by no means an easy victory Saturday, however. The Tigers gave up 244 passing yards to the Yellow Jackets (2-8, 1-7) and were limited to just 65 passing yards offensively. But ETBU churned out 226 yards on the ground and scored touchdowns on offense, defense and special teams to cap the win.  Full Story  |  Game Stats

Mistakes costly in loss to Azusa Pacific
AZUSA, Calif. (11/8/08) – Three turnovers, a blocked punt and an inability to get off the field on third down were a dangerous combination against ETBU on Saturday, as the Tigers dropped a 33-21 non-conference loss to Asuza Pacific Saturday here in southern California. The loss drops ETBU to 4-5 on the season, and the Tigers will look to complete a second straight .500 season next week in the season finale in Brownwood against Howard Payne. Azusa Pacific, a member of the NAIA, completed its season with only its second win of the year. Both wins for the Cougars (2-8) this season came against NCAA Division III opponents. The Cougars scored what would be the permanent go-ahead touchdown with six seconds left in the first half to go up 13-7 at the break. Azusa then added two quick second-half touchdowns to go up 26-7, and the Tigers were fighting uphill the entire second half.

UMHB defense shakes down Tigers, 27-6
MARSHALL, Texas (11/1/08) – Ninth-ranked Mary Hardin-Baylor outscored ETBU 17-0 after halftime and held the Tigers to just 19 yards rushing on the way to a 27-6 victory in Ornelas Stadium Saturday. The game was the home finale of the season for ETBU (4-4, 4-3), with the Tigers set to close the season with two road games in the next two weeks. UMHB (7-1, 6-0) was coming off a 40-28 non-conference loss to Southern Oregon last week, but the Cru jumped back into ASC play by winning their 27th straight conference outing. UMHB now hasn’t lost a game to an ASC opponent since the first month of the 2005 season. The Cru defense totally snuffed out an ETBU running game that had posted 200 rushing yards or more in each of its four victories this season. The Tigers actually gained 56 yards on the ground, but a net loss of 37 yards – mostly coming on three big sacks – put the net total at 19. Full Story

Frazier named ASC Defensive Player of the Week
MARSHALL, Texas (10/27/08) – ETBU cornerback Anquanius "Huggie” Frazier has been named the American Southwest Conference Co-Defensive Player of the Week for his role in the Tigers’ 24-21 victory at Mississippi College this past Saturday night. Frazier, a senior from Daingerfield, picked off two passes to help the Tiger defense preserve a late lead for ETBU (4-3 overall, 4-2 ASC) in the win over the Choctaws. The victory snapped a two-game losing skid by the Tigers and helped ETBU avenge a 45-21 defeat at home to Mississippi College last season. It was the second time this season in which Frazier has intercepted two passes in a game. The 6-0, 200-pound cornerback now has a team-high four interceptions and 11 passes defended this season.

Tigers rally for 24-21 win at Mississippi College
CLINTON, Miss. (10/25/08) – ETBU overcame a fourth-quarter deficit Saturday night and turned back Mississippi College, 24-21, at Robinson-Hale Stadium. The Tigers (4-3 overall, 4-2 in the American Southwest Conference) solidified sole possession of third place in the league with the victory, which spoiled homecoming for the Choctaws (2-5, 2-3). It also snapped a two-game losing streak by ETBU while giving the Tigers a four-game winning streak against Mississippi College in Clinton. Full Story

Former Tiger Darius Roberts signs with Bossier-Shreveport BattleWings
MARSHALL, Texas (10/21/08) – Former ETBU safety Darius Roberts has signed a one-year contract with the Bossier-Shreveport BattleWings of the AF2 arena football league.
