Tiger Athletics
East Texas Baptist University offers student-athletes, students and sports fans a wide variety of intercollegiate athletics programs from which to choose. The ETBU Athletic Department seeks to provide quality Christian education and competition for all of its student-athletes.
ETBU is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and competes at the NCAA Division III level. Division III is non-scholarship, meaning ETBU does not offer athletic scholarships in any sports program. Student-athletes can receive financial aid through loans, grants or academic scholarships, however. ETBU has been a member of Division III since 1998, joining the ranks from status as an NAIA and NCAA Division II institution.
ETBU joined the American Southwest Conference (ASC) in 1998. The ASC is divided into East and West Divisions, with a current total membership of 15 colleges and universities. ETBU competes in the East Division, which includes LeTourneau University (Longview, Texas), Louisiana College (Pineville, La.), Mississippi College (Clinton, Miss.), University of the Ozarks (Clarksville, Ark.), University of Texas-Dallas (Richardson, Texas), and the University of Texas-Tyler (Tyler, Texas).
The West Division consists of Concordia University (Austin, Texas), Hardin-Simmons University (Abilene, Texas), Howard Payne University (Brownwood, Texas), McMurry University (Abilene, Texas), Schreiner University (Kerrville, Texas), Sul Ross State University (Alpine, Texas), Texas Lutheran University (Seguin, Texas), and the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (Belton, Texas).
Since 1995, ETBU has added seven new athletic programs: men's soccer (1995), women's volleyball (1996), softball (1998), women's soccer (1999), football (2000) and cross country (2000). The university is preparing to add tennis as a varsity sport sometime in the future.
ETBU's athletic facilities are also recognized as some of the finest in NCAA Division III. Athletic facilites include Dean Healthplex, which houses most athletic offices, weight room, racquetball courts, indoor jogging/walking track and other training facilities; Ornelas Gymnasium, which seats 1,600 for volleyball and basketball; Ornelas Stadium, which opened in 2000 for football nearly two years ahead of schedule; Cornish Field, which opened in the fall of 2002 for soccer; Woods Field, which has been home to Tiger baseball since the mid-1960s and added lights for night baseball in 2008; and Taylor Field, which open in the fall of 1997 and hosts Lady Tiger softball games.
Since joining the ASC prior to the 1999-2000 season, ETBU has won nine conference championships: softball (2000-04), volleyball (2001-03) and football (2003).
