Model United Nations

Simulating international organizations is an activity dating back more than 70 years ago, and the Model United Nations (MUN) is a simulation of real United Nations bodies. Every year thousands of high school and college students come together at hundreds of different conferences where they assume the roles of ambassadors to the United Nations and assemble in various committees to discuss current issues on the multilateral agenda. Through Model United Nations, students experience the ways in which the international community deals with economic and environmental concerns, human rights abuses, disarmament and political conflicts, and many other global problems. Through the preparation in this unique simulation, our students will develop insights into the culture and political system of the country(ies) represented, and acquire knowledge and practical experience in the workings of international diplomacy through advocacy, conflict resolution, and negotiation. Our students will also sharpen their analytical, communicative, and leadership skills; and gain confidence in their ability to function as student diplomats.

ETBU started attending these Model United Nations conferences since 2004. We have represented several countries so far—El Salvador, Slovakia, Egypt, Honduras, and the United Republic of Tanzania, and we are so excited to represent Sweden in the upcoming MUN conference in the Fall of 2009. Our students attended four conferences at the American Model United Nations (Chicago) and one conference at the National Model United Nations (New York). At least 8-10 students participated at every conference, and several times our students were recognized for their great performance at the conference, and they were asked to come back and participate as volunteers to run the conference. One major highlight of our program here was, in 2005 when our students argued and won their case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) or the World Court simulation. In conclusion, this MUN provides a great opportunity for our students at ETBU to mingle with other students from reputed universities in the nation to debate global issues, propose policy choices, and sharpen their leadership and diplomatic skills. If anybody needs more information regarding this program, they can contact Dr. Israel Nandamudi at inandamudi@etbu.edu or at (903) 923-2085.
