With a major or minor in International Studies, you can:
· learn about the broader world, the world's nations, and the relationships between nations, within the context of a liberal arts higher education;
· develop your skills in modern languages and intercultural communications;
· connect your learning with study abroad opportunities;
· improve your professional and interpersonal skills in international settings;
· satisfy your curiosity to understand people in other societies; and
· build personal relationships through intercultural experiences outside your own culture and society.
The program requires at least one international study experience, including one or more East Texas Baptist University travel-study courses, or courses taken abroad but pre-approved for application to the major or minor. The courses will be proposed as directed study courses in collaboration with your faculty advisor. Courses are approved through the regular directed study process in the host department and school-the Department of History and Political Science and the Schoolof Humanities.
The transfer and substitution provisions make it possible for you to apply non-ETBU study-abroad courses to the major or minor. For example, if you are a modern language student, you may plan to get a language concentration during a semester or year of language study abroad and apply the courses to your major. In another example, you and your advisor may plan an internship, in any ETBU major, completed during a semester abroad. In a third example, if you decide to study with Hong Kong Baptist University, HKBU courses would be pre-approved to count either in the general education or major requirements for your degree.
International Studies as a second major or a minor: You may choose to complete a second major or a minor in International Studies; your classroom and study-abroad courses can be used to enhance or supplement the first major. Examples of primary majors in relation to the IS minor:
· Teacher Education Certification-all fields, International Studies minor, including possible ESL certification, in preparation for international education careers
· Business majors-International Studies emphasis in international business
· Biology and other sciences-International Studies courses or research internship
· Speech Communication and Mass Communication-International Studies internship
· Behavioral Sciences-International Studies field research internship
· And so forth; depending on your objectives and by working out a plan with your advisor, your major can be enhanced by the study abroad opportunities provided in the International Studies minor.
Requirements for the International Studies Major:
