The Theatre Arts program at ETBU is designed to prepare students for careers in professional theatre, theatre education, and/or graduate school. Our students will find themselves contributing to the world in many ways as performers, playwrights, designers, technicians, directors, producers, managers, and a myriad of other possibilities. The range of other career prospects are vast and diverse-teaching, arts programming and administration, art therapy, youth-at-risk counseling, recreational drama for special populations. Many politicians, business men, and attorneys start their careers with studies in theatre. In our rapidly-changing society, there are literally hundreds of career fields open to theatre graduates with skills in communication, creative problem-solving and critical thinking developed during their liberal arts studies.
Below are descriptions and lists of possible career opportunities, but this list is just the beginning. With the skills learned in our program students will find many possibilities open to them.
Theatre Arts Education:
As in virtually every academic discipline, the nation-wide teacher shortage applies to the theatre discipline as well. However, most undergraduate theatre programs have traditionally graduated many more students in the BA programs as opposed to the BSE. ETBU has been no exception. This does mean that students who choose to complete the theatre arts major on the BSE and achieve teacher certification will have a significant advantage in the competition for public school teaching positions over non-certified graduates on the BA degree.
Students may also pursue further education in graduate school to teach at college and professional levels.

Professional Performance:
Theatre-related fields are extremely competitive. The Actors Equity Association consistently reports extremely low employment rates for its membership. Professional opportunities exist at various levels including community, regional, stock and repertory, commercial, television/film, and academic levels.

There are many positions available to individuals who have skills in a specific trade regardless of their experience and training in theatre. Qualified designers, technical directors, costumers, make-up artists, etc., who have experience in theatre are highly valued in the industry.

Typical of most liberal arts degrees, the college graduate holding a degree in theatre is a proven academic commodity, desirable to many employers regardless of the specific discipline. The nature of the theatre discipline makes these graduates particularly appealing for any job that demands skills and abilities in such areas as public relations, marketing, salesmanship, and communications. Medical schools, business schools, and law schools value students with artistic backgrounds. Many other fields value individuals who have the ability to make public presentations and think artistically and creatively.
