Advance in Ministry

Advance in Ministry is an intentional, multiple-year approach to prepare ministry students for vocational and dual vocational ministry. The goal of the program is to assist students in their spiritual formation and the establishment of a firm ministerial foundation that leads to service and leadership. This program is coordinated through the Office of In-Service Guidance. This program is required for all those receiving the ministry scholarship.

The first meetings in the Fall and the Spring semesters will serve as general orientations and organizational meetings with appropriate announcements, etc.

Three (3) Fall and three (3) Spring meetings will be in small groups for directed reflection according to the following modules:

1) Module 1 (Freshmen) - "Discovering"

  • Spiritual formation small group experience
  • A natural companion to and preparation for RLGN 2340, Ministry Formations: a required course for all ministry scholarship recipients.

2) Module 2 (Sophomores) - "Connecting (with Baptist Heritage)"

  • Small group experience in which the student discovers that his/her ministry formation is related to a rich heritage of Baptists in Texas, North America, and around the world.

3) Module 3 (Juniors) - "Serving"

  • Small group experience focusing on spiritual discernment and service and the relationship of these two disciplines to Scripture and the life of Christ.
  • Opportunities for Christian service will be available in association with the Great Commission Center.

4) Module 4 (Seniors) - "Leading

  • The student is engaged in mentoring by facilitating a freshman AIM group. The student will also consider his/her spiritual formation and ministry development in light of the leadership style of Christ. Each senior will be required to be enrolled in RLGN 4350, Internship in Religion, in order to complete the requirements related to the ministry scholarship.
